ITS22 Bio creams
03 déc. 2022Students have a conference about the impact of sun cream on maritime species. They debate about the human responsibilities. They prepare a bio cosmetic in labs with science teachers by following instructions:
In a beker, weight. beewax and shea butter. Weight in a beker sweet almond oil (write the weight down).
Melt beewax and shea butter in a ban-mare. Gently heat oil up to 45°C (check its temperature with a thermometer). Stir melted beewax + butter + oil. Heat the mixture (No more than 50 - 55 °C).
Check that the mixture does not contain solid parts: YES Stop heating, cool slightly, mix, start heating again
NO blend the mixture with a hand blender with weight of distilled water or measure of distilled water with heatdistilled water(up to 50°C) and slowly pour water in the mixture and keep blending.
The mixture of oils +water forms an emusion. Keep blending until the cream becomes clear and opaque (it tends to form a ribbon). Place the container in a basin with cold water. Mix until the cream is completely cold.
Add drops of essential oil, mix, put into clean, dry jars. Possibly sterilize the jars with 5 minutes of boiling.
Sondage Sun cream
All students enjoyed this activity in the lab to create their own bio cream. It was the occasion to discuss in pairs, to help each other and follow the rules that science teachers asked.
