The students discover Monreale and visit the cathedral. It is one of the greatest examples of Norman architecture in Sicily. The church is a national monument in Italy and one of the most important attractions in Sicily. Since 2015 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.

History – East meets west: According to a legend, the Norman king William II fell asleep under a carob tree whilehunting in the woods near Monreale. The Holy Virgin appeared to him in dream, suggesting him to build a churchhere. After removing the tree, a treasure was found in its roots and the golden coins were used to finance the construction.

The cathedral was built in 1174. Islamic architects designed it and the result is a perfect amalgamation of Arab, Byzantine and Norman artistic styles.

Mosaics : The spirit of Byzantine culture is very much present in the mosaics that cover every available surface. Theyare in pure gold and artists from Constantinople were employed. Mosaics are among the most magnificent in the world. They represent scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Students saw the story of the Creation, the creationof Eve, the Fall of Man, expulsion, and Cain and Noah's orders to build the ark. The transept is devoted to the life and Passion of Jesus, the Resurrection, and the apostles Paul and Peter, ending on the north wall with the Passion, Crucifixion, and the risen Christ. In the half-dome of the central apse, you can see the monumental picture of Christ the Pantocrator

The Nave has three aisles separated by two rows of nine columns. The central aisle has a beautifully painted roof truss. In front of the crossing pillars in the central aisle, underneath mosaic pictures of William II, stand the thrones of the king (on the left) and the bishop (on the right).

The cloister It was also built on William's instruction. It’s a square surrounded by 26 arches which delimit the beautifulgarden, and which are supported by 228 double columns. These columns are either smooth or inlaid with coloredstones, no two pairs alike, and in the corners four smaller columns with relief work: animals, human figures, mythicalbeasts, and other motifs are executed in infinite detail. In one corner there is a fountain with ornamented columns.

Façade and Exterior: On the east side, you can admire the three apses. The entrance façade is less impressive, withone of its two towers unfinished. But the two bronze portals are noteworthy

It was an amazing experience for students to discover it with so many treasures of architectures and mosaics.
