SW22 Visit and workshop « Lilla Nyby » (recycling center)
10 déc. 2022Students discover a part of recycling methods in Sweden. First, a teacher began with the presentation of the Lilla Nyby center about the Swedish recycling trash system. Then, she presented a video which is an interview about recycling habits in their country. With the second activity, french students learnt a lot about their use of different colours of plastic bags in the same litter to distinguish every kind of trash, for example: blue is for newspapers, grey for metal waste and pink for clothes. They also have « pant », this is a box in which you can put your unused glass bottles and get your money back. Food waste and other household waste must be placed in plastic bags too of course.
So, our students had to put different materials used in the good packaging. They colored them to put in the good bin.
As the Swedish Eskiltuna’s citizens they sort most of the packaging into different colored bags and put them in bins.
Then, we visited the center. Waste from over 48,000 residential households is sorted by type of material to then be recycled into new packaging and products. At the recycling center citizens can leave all your waste that they cannot sort at home in the waste bin. They can leave hazardous waste in the Environmental shed, old clothes in the containers for textiles and of course also your bulky waste, construction and demolition waste on the ramp. Here they can also leave things for recycling in a container that goes to ReTuna Återbruksgalleria , and they can deposit several sacks with a deposit in just a few minutes in the large deposit machine. The staff is there to help to find the right one and sort. Chemicals, paint, pesticides, spray cans, batteries, light sources, nail polish, and more can be deposited. Every spring the center has an open house at Lilla Nyby when people as a private person can visit and get a tour inside the color sorting facility. The guide usually works with primary schools to educate the young pupils.
The center work together with several of the municipality's property owners to improve sorting in multi-family buildings. For the environment and also because the property can significantly reduce its waste costs by reducing the amount of waste that goes to incineration.
Students saw a very good practices for reduce wastes. The center wants everyone to have the opportunity to sort their waste in a simple way with the 7 color bags. We could use it in France too.
