IT23 Visit to Pisa, Piazza dei Miracoli
01 avr. 2023The three structures that can be admired in the piazza are considered central to religious life, as they symbolize the stages of human life: the Baptistery represents birth, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (which represents the maximum expression of Pisan Romanesque architecture) represents life and the Camposanto alludes to death. The famous leaning tower is considered a part of the cathedral since it is really its bell tower.
The construction of the Duomo began in the 11th century and was completed in the 19th century thanks to the architect Alessandro Gherardesca. Its remarkable to know that in the 15th century, under the Medici and Lorraine dominance in the region, the monuments were surrounded by many other buildings which were later knocked down at the end of 19th century by Alessandro La Gherardesca to give the square its current structure.
Thanks to the information provided to the students they were able to grasp the most important artistic and historical features of Piazza dei Miracoli, to admire the main buildings and increase their awareness of European heritage.
