IT22 The city trip in Paola
16 nov. 2022The students were divided into three groups of different nationalities. In each group, two Italian students acted as guides in the city of Paola and the other Italian students presented the history of the place. Walking around the city, the pupils discovered the emblematic places of the city. The objective of this city trip is to find the mystery word in a crossword puzzle. For this purpose, at each important place selected for the visit, one of the Italian pupils explained the history of the place and its monument and the pupils had to listen and answer the question in order to complete the crossword. In particular, the students were able to discover: the church of San Jacob, the church of Rosary, the Birthplace of the patron saint, the Seven canals fountain, the fountain, the clock tower, the cathedral and the municipal place.
For example, the students were impressed by :
- The monumental Fountain of the Seven Canals (dated 1636). Originally it had 12 holes, today it consists of two arms, the walls of which have seven panels with seven stone protomes, from which the water flows, and is then collected by a channel and poured into a semi-circular basin.
- The gothic-style cathedral, which can be reached after climbing many steps. It overlooks the city of Paola and the sea.
- The church of Rosary with a painting of the black Madonna.
- The piazza del popolo with the clock tower and the main foutain, in front of the arch of St Francis of Paola.
The mystery word to be discovered in the crossword puzzle was the peacock, the symbol of Paola.
The students acquired more historical and cultural knowledge about the history of Paola. They will be able to reinvest the vocabulary learned and the historical approach used.
