IT22 Visit to Cosenza
16 nov. 2022The students followed a guided tour of Cosenza, a city in Calabria, and it is the capital of the Province of Cosenza. The ancient city of Cosenza was the capital of the Italic tribe of the Bruttii. Over the centuries, Cosenza maintained a distinctive character and the city has been marked by several dominations: the Roman Empire, the Normans, the Hohenstaufen dynasty, the Angevins and the Spanish dynasty, The ancient town is the seat of the Cosentian Academy, one of the oldest academies of philosophical and literary studies in Italy and Europe. The guide showed them different aspects of the city at different times in its history, which allowed the students to make the link with the work they had to do themselves during the week. In particular, the students were able to discover:
- The cathedral dates from the 12th century: the facade in sandstone, culminating in a sober broken saddle crowning, is marked by large pilasters placed so as to frame the three portance, delineated by deep ogival cornices. There’s a large rose window in the upper section
- The Academy: dates from the 16th century: first it was a literary academy and then it became more predominantly scientific thanks to the contribution of Bernardino Telesio, philosopher and naturalist of Cosenza
-The municipal public garden: it takes up a vast area of the city’s old town center. We could find some pools (like the pool of Venus) and statues.
-The San Domenico ‘s church dates around the 15th century. Students visited the cloister.
The students acquired more historical and cultural knowledge about the history of Cosenza. They will be able to reinvest the vocabulary learned and the historical approach used.
