During this short mobility to Italy, students were introduced to team orienteering against the clock.
Having been divided into mixed nationality groups of 4 to 6, students were given the task to negotiate a map and find 14 marked checkpoints and explained the instructions. They were set off in two minute intervals and timed as they negotiatetheir ways through the city of Casalmaggiore. Afterwards, they collect lanterns that had been placed on the orienteering course.
Students were forced to work with their partners and become a real team as well as integrating themselves into the othergroup of students who they had just met. All students encouraged each other as they needed to make adjustments in pace to contend with each other’s difficulties. It was pleasing to watch every student finish the course with different groups making different decisions on pace, speed and whether or not they should walk as not to miss the check points or run to beat the clock.
The students had a great time together in the outdoor area of the high school, they were motivated to find the clues to discover the highlights of the city and the markers scattered around the area for some groups as quickly as possible in order to finish the orienteering course first.
