IT23 Visit to Verona
01 avr. 2023The students were divided into several small groups and the objective was to learn about Verona's rich historical. The historic city of Verona was founded in the 1st century B.C. It particularly flourished under the rule of the Scaliger family in the 13th and 14th centuries and as part of the Republic of Venice from the 15th to 18th centuries. Verona has preserved a remarkable number of monuments from antiquity, the medieval and Renaissance periods. Verona is also famous for Romeo and Juliet’s love story. The students were able to discover:
-The Roman Amphitheatre, know as the Verona Arena, is the icon of the city. It was built in the first half of the 1stcentury A.D.
-Domus Romana: in a shop in the center of Verona there are Roman Ruins.
-Piazza delle Erbe: it is a square and it was once the town’s forum during the time of the Roman Empire.
-Arco della Costa: there is a bone in the center of the medieval Arco della Costa. It’s been hanging there since at least the 1700s.
-The Lords Square: is a fabulous place to soak up the history and culture of Verona. It has a strong connection with William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In the center, there is an impressive 19th-century statue of the poet Dante.
-The Scaliger Tombs: it is a group of five Gothic funerary monuments celebrating the Scaglier who ruled the city from the 13th to the late 14th century.
-Giulietta’s house: it is a tower house from between late 13th and early 14th century. There is a statue of Juliet, just under the famous balcony. The statue soon became one of the symbols of Verona. The custom of touching the statue of Juliet to get lucky in love soon spread.
The students acquired more historical and cultural knowledge about the history of Verona. They will be able to reinvest the vocabulary learned and the historical approach used. The students discovered the city's landmarks and took pictures of themselves in front of them (part of the challenge).
