FR23 CC - Carbon print
12 nov. 2023A French teacher began with a definition of climate change explaining why climate change is a problem. She gave us a list a example: disrupting weather patterns, causing weather events, rising temperatures and increasing sea level, destroying animals habitats, and displacing population, reducing the ice coverage of the north pole (less 80% since the 1980's). Nevertheless, greenhouse gases are already in our atmosphere, however the humans’ actions make it even worse. She gave us an example of a warming of 0.5°C: coral bleaching, species loss, drought, rise of the sea. Then she explained the greenhouse effects.
What cause climate change? Burning fossil fuel, deforestation, … Social justice is also important because the countries that contribute the less are the one that knows the worst effects. Can we fix it? According to her, yes by reducing gas emissions and our carbon footprint and raising our voices to make politicians, government and industry to act, innovating and transitioning to a lower carbon economy. Now few words about the COP26 in Glasgow, after the agreement in Paris in 2015 to limit global warming at 2°C, the government renewed their commitment to lowering their emission every 5 years, each being more ambitious. During the COP 21, 17 sustainable development goals (SDG's) were also adopted by all United Nations States as : eradicate poverty, gender equalities, recycling, reducing gas emissions. What can we do ? Speak up for world and business leaders, and act in our school community and government. During this activity the students have to use a website to estimate their personal carbon footprint and compare it with other students from different countries.
They have to answer the questions about their consumption, food, transport they use and house habits. After that the students create a graph and paste their results and the avarage results to create a radar graph. Thanks to this task the students are able to compare the situation and the behaviour of the citizens in others countries.
The students evaluated their own carbon footprint and they compared it with others students. They are aware of the situation in others countries. They are aware of their impact on the environment.
