FR23 PSLL - Visit Parlementarium
12 nov. 2023In the Parlementarium students learned about how EU has been shaped and reshaped over time. The activity unfolded through various themes focusing on different aspects of European history and identity.
In "Shaping Europe," the students encountered interactive exhibits on the mapping of Europe, the continent's heritage, and the diverse interpretations of its history, while in "Europe: A Global Power," showed Europe's role in political changes, market dynamics, people's movements, scientific advancements, and imperialism.
The era of "Europe in Ruins" brought World War I and II into focus, contrasting totalitarianism with democracy and illustratning the destruction wrought by these wars as well as the subsequent efforts to rebuild a divided continent.
"Rebuilding Europe" took the students through the Cold War period, the creation of social security systems, and milestones in European integration, along with a poignant remembrance of the Shoah.
"Shattering Certainties," let the students explore the end of economic booms, democratization in Western Europe, the pressure on Communism and the evolving map and memories of Europe. Finally, "Europe Now" presented contemporary issues and perspectives, inviting the students to track their personal connections to Europe.
The results were multi-dimensional and reflected a deepened understanding among the students about Europe's complexities. They emerged with a better grasp of European history, linking past events to present challenges and speculating thoughtfully on the continent's future. The exercise of analyzing current conflicts and opportunities through exhibited objects led to discussions about Europe's core values and identity.
A significant outcome was the students' enhanced ability to discern the unique aspects of European culture and history. They could articulate how Europe stands apart from other continents, recognizing its distinct achievements and traditions. The activity also stirred a sense of connection with European heritage among the students, fostering a sense of belonging and understanding of their place in a larger historical and cultural context.
The activity achieved its educational objectives, leaving the students informed, engaged, and thoughtful about Europe's role in their lives and in the global landscape.
