GR24 CAE Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki

students follow a different tour and participating in an experiential game working together in mixed small groups in order to discover for themselves secrets of Byzantine culture. This moment was a great esperience enrich cultural experience, explore the byzantine history of the place. They had the chance to learn more about the Greek culture and go through the age and this civilization really influent in Europe.

The permanent exhibition of the museum, comprised of 11 galleries, is chronologically arranged, divided into thematic entities. Through the display of authentic artefacts that come from Thessaloniki and Macedonia mainly, and the use of graphics and multimedia, it presents diverse aspects of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture. 

Early Christian or Proto-Byzantine Period (4th-7th c.): Room 1: The Early Christian Church/ Room 2: The Early Christian City and Private Dwelling/ Room 3: From the Elysian Fields to the Christian Paradise / 

Middle Byzantine Period (8th-12th c.): Room 4: From Iconoclasm to the Splen- dour of the Macedonian and Komnenian Dynasties/ Room 5: The Dynasties of the Byzantine Emperors/ Room 6: The Byzantine Fortress
Late Byzantine Period (1204-1453): Room 7: The Twilight of Byzantium/ Rooms 8, 9: The Collections of Dori Papa- stratou and Dimitrios Oikonomopoulos/ Room 10: Byzantium after Byzantium: the Byzantine Legacy in the Years after the Fall of Constantinople/  Room 11: Discovering the Past 

The Thessaloniki mint: Apart from Constantinople, Thessaloniki was the only city in the eastern part of the Empire that did not stop minting gold coins in the Early Christian period. This shows what an important administrative and economic centre it was in its own geographical area.

Architecture: Numerous churches were built in the first half of the 13th century as new provincial, centres were created. The architectural types of the previous period continued, and a new one appeared, the cross. vaulted church.

This visit experience enables to create links by visiting together while they were visiting the impressive historical museum. The conception of the game by small groups who explain to the others was really a good idea.
