As a place for the pursuit of their studies and exercise, he assigned the sanctuary of the Nymphs, near Mieza, where, to this very day, they show you Aristotle's stone seats, and the shady walks.

(Plutarch, Vita Alexandri, 7.4)

A lovely, cool and shady place, the rural sanctuary of the Nymphs has been since the years of Plutarch (1st - 2nd century AD) an attraction associated in the memory of the citizens of Mieza with the figures of two great men: Alexander and Aristotle.

In an era of universal revival of the glorious past, the landscape with its ma terial remains, is the memorial place par excellence, the tangible bond of historical continuity, which the locals display every time to visitors.

The natural and clear springs, the small caves and the lush vegetation are the ideal place of residence and worship of the nurturers of gods and heroes. The Nymphs live and represent nature in its most attractive, varied and nourishing aspect.

The site was originally used as a poros stone quarry. In the second half of the 4th cent. BC the quarry was reshaped and reorganized by a small por-tico, adding to the place clear characteristics of a sanctuary. The monumental gabled entries to the caves, as well as stactures in their inner place, make evident their sacred character and testify ritual ceremonies.

Standing in Aristotle’s cave felt surreal  like walking through a living classroom. The peaceful setting made it easy to imagine great ideas being shared here. Students were inspired by the connection between nature and ancientknowledge. It made learning feel real, not just something from books.
