This activity focuses on democratic participation, media freedom, and European parliamentary processes through an interactive role-play simulation. By taking part in a parliamentary debate, students gain first-hand experience of how political decision-making, argumentation, and democratic dialogue function within a legislative framework.

First, video clips are viewed and discussed on the European Parliament, the parties of current MEPs and freedom of the press (10 minutes).

Then, the teacher introduces the topic, explains the rules, and assigns roles : students are divided into political groups representing different parliamentary positions, such as Conservatives and Reformists : conservatives focus on preserving traditional media regulations and limiting sudden changes, while reformists advocate for reforms aimed at increasing transparency, independence, and freedom of the media. Working collaboratively, they prepare arguments supporting their assigned viewpoints, analysing issues related to media freedom and regulation (20 minutes).

During the simulated parliamentary session, students present their proposals, defend their positions (15 minutes per groups), and engage in structured debate with opposing groups (20 minutes). They respond to questions, challenge counterarguments, and practise public speaking in a formal debate setting. Peer interaction plays a central role, as students learn from one another through discussion, rebuttals, and active listening.

The activity concludes with a voting phase on the proposed directive (10 minutes), followed by a collective reflection. Students analyse the outcomes of the debate and discuss what they have learned about media freedom, democratic processes, and parliamentary dynamics (10 minutes).

Through this experience, students develop their self-confidence, citizenship, critical thinking, intercultural and English communication skills. This role-play helps them understand contemporary issues related to freedom of the press as a pillar of democracy, which strengthens their understanding of the EU's common values.
