SP23 Guided visit to the Olympic Museum in Barcelona

Thanks to a guide who explains the museum in English, the students visit the Olympic museum which was built so that the citizens of Barcelona and all over the world remembered the Olympic Games held here and also the history of these Games, some of the most important sports people and saw original objects related to the Olympic Games : The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece. As cities were rivals, athletes had to take part in the games, which were held in Olympia. At first, they lasted just 1 day, with running as the only discipline. They then lasted longer as new disciplines were added, such as wrestling. They were also held every 4 years. Only free Greek men could take part. At the time of the Roman conquest, the Olympic Games were still famous, but in the Roman style. It was a way of training soldiers for the Roman Empire. The Roman Olympics were more brutal and bloody than the Greek ones, as they provided entertainment for the people. The Olympics were banned with the arrival of the Christians and never took place again until Pierre de Coubertin, who in the 19th century restored them to the spirit of the ancient Olympics. At first, only men could take part. Women were only allowed to take part in 1900, but they had to be very well dressed and could only play golf and tennis. Women have been able to take part in all disciplines since 1928.
