The Director General of Services presented to the students, in the council room, the territorial organization of Ireland and the responsibilities and functioning of the Wexford County Council. 

-Ireland is divided into 31 : 26 county council, 3 city council and 2 city and county council.
-The entire population of wexford 163,527 in the 2022 census an increase of over 14,000 since the last census in 2016
-The council employ over 800 people and provid public services and facilities such as  : Housing, Planning, Roads, Environnemental Protection, Librairies and much more…
-The council will spend over €151m in 2023
-the funds come from  : Governement Grants € 55m, Goods & services e.g Rents/pazrking, fees €39m, Local Property Tax by 63,000 house owners €15m and commerial Rates paid by 4,600 busunesses €42m
-Since 2019 Wexford County Council has been divided into five Districts having previously been made up of four This was due to electoral boundary revisions.
-Every 5 years general and local Elections are held and this in when the councillors, also known as Members, are voted into office. In total there are 34 coucillors elected to Wexford county council, with five theses concillorselected from the Rosslare District.

 

After this presentation, the students worked in groups on what they had learned and prepared a series of questions that they could ask the service director. This allowed them to understand how to go about a council meeting .

 

 

•The students will notice that the functioning and areas of competence of an Irish county council and a group of French municipalities were approximately the same, particularly with regard to the issue of sustainable development.
• They had another opportunity to develop their language skills when they spoke in the board room.
