PL24 CC - Movie “A life on our planet”
24 févr. 2024The students watch the movie “A life on our planet” in the lycée amphitheatre . The legendary narrator is David Attenborough : he is a British science writer and naturalist who has often spoken out in favour of sustainable development and the protection of the Earth's environment, and who constantly proposes ecological solutions to the problems generated by a globalised extractivist and consumer economy. His theory on world population is widely echoed: "Instead of controlling the planet's environment for the benefit of the population, perhaps we should control the population to ensure the survival of our environment". In this film, he recalls his life and talks about the evolution of life on Earth, lamenting the loss of wildlife and sharing his vision for the future.
Students are asked to list the problems raised by the narrator, the solutions proposed and to identify the vocabulary and expressions they will need to produce their own summary. Then, they are divided in groups and have to prepare a poster covering the threat resulting from bad human activity, its effects and specific actions we can/should take to prevent/minimize this threat. They focus on the various forms of life, on land, in the air and in the waters of rivers and oceans, as well as about vegetation and air.
At the end, the students present the results of their work by discussing current human activities, their effects and proposing specific solutions to problems.. They learn to listen to others, developing the ability to listen with respect and accept other opinions, sometimes differing from their own. By cooperating in a group, they demonstrate theirskills, see themselves in situations that may be unfamiliar to them, and learn about their own character traits. Havingto present the results of the group's work, students speak on the forum, which is often a huge challenge. They face a challenge that requires them to have the courage to appear on a forum and speak in a foreign language in front of others.
