24 févr. 2024The students participate in workshops at the Łódź Orientarium. Classes are held in English. Classes are devoted to the protection of biodiversity of the Asian continent. The Malay word Orang Hutan literally means man of the forest. These intelligent primates have more in common with humans than you might think. And yet it is we, the people, who pose the greatest threat to them. By looking at the orangutans in Łódź, we learn how oil palm cultivation affects the fate of their wild relatives living in Borneo and Sumatra, as well as other animal species: Malayan bears, Javan rhinos and clouded leopards. We learn what products contain palm oil and consider why it is worth consciously giving them up. Then students are invited to sit down. A great deal of information are provided on palm oil production, and its social and environmental consequences. The consequences for human health and the disappearance of animal species. Orangutans in particular. Plantations are destroying the habitat of orangutans and pesticides are polluting the earth , water and air. Then the guide presents the group with two baskets of products, on with palm oil free products and another with everyday products containing palm. By looping at the orangutans in Lodz, students learn how oil palm cultivation affects the fate of their wild relatives living in Borneo and Sumatra, as well as other animal species, Malayan bears, Javan rhinos and clouded leopard. They learn which products contain Palm oil and consider why it is worth consciously giving them up. Growing palm oil has numerous environmental consequences and social ethical problems : increased greenhouse gas emissions, landslides and flooding, pollution, destruction of animal habitats (particularly the worrying disappearance of orangutans), exploitation of small producers who work in unacceptable conditions. The workshop therefore invites students to be careful about what they buy and to be aware of the ingredients that should be avoided, especially as palm oil is very rich in saturated fatty acids, so it is harmful to health as it can increase bad cholesterol levels and increase cardiovascular risks.
