FR24 EC Port Center

During their visit to the Dunkirk port center, students experienced an in-depth exploration of one of Europe’s largest industrial hubs. Guided through a detailed tour, they discovered the extensive workings of the port, which spans 17 kilometers, houses 8 docks, and contains nearly 9,000 gates. Observing massive vessels, clippers, and cranes capable of handling 40 tons of cargo, students witnessedfirsthand the complexity of large-scale logistics. They learned about ArcelorMittal, the continent’s largest steel mill, and saw operationsinvolving 20,000 containers moved daily by crane. In an interactive setting, students listened attentively and engaged with the guide, askingquestions about the processes behind both imports and exports. They learned how Dunkirk’s strategic location facilitates the transport of essential food products and other goods across Europe and beyond. This experience provided them with a practical understanding of the port’s economic role and its logistical and industrial functions.

Students gained a solid understanding of Dunkirk’s port operations, identifying its strategic role in European trade and the machinery usedfor large-scale logistics. They are now capable of describing key port functions name specific imported and exported products, understanding Dunkirk's role in the food supply chain. They also reflected upon the important of renewable energy sources  and the attention given by the city of Dunkirk to the process of decarbonisation. The students will be able to  see the huge area of the port; to understand how a commercial area works (import + export); to understand how steel, iron and coal are produced; to listen and understand English
