LT26 PSLL Cultural and Educational Trip to Vilnius

The trip to Vilnius offers students a structured exploration of the capital of Lithuania, combining guided visits to emblematic landmarks with reflective observation and peer exchange. Key sites include the Vilnius TV Tower, Vilnius Cathedral and its underground crypts, as well as the Cathedral Bell Tower, each illustrating different historical layers of the city, from medieval foundations to Soviet-era history. Throughout the excursion, students receive expert-led explanations that situate monuments within broader historical, political, and cultural frameworks. Particular attention is given to Lithuania’s complex past, including its religious heritage, periods of foreign domination, struggles for independence, and contemporary national identity. The pedagogical approach emphasizes active learning: students are encouraged to observe architectural and symbolic elements, formulate questions, and engage in discussions with the guide. This interactive dimension fosters deeper understanding of Lithuanian history. Then they had 2 hours of free time in the old 
Vilnius TV Tower: During a short mini-conference, a guide explains that it was built in the 1960s as a modern engineering project and later became a strong symbol of the city’s skyline. Students will also hear key dates (construction, opening) and how the monument’s role changed over time, from a technical building to a major tourist and cultural landmark. We take the lift up to the observation deck, and enjoy a clear view of the city while learning how the tower is used for TV and radio broadcasting.

Vilnius Cathedral and crypts: we visit the Royal Crypt and see the sarcophagus prepared for Vytautas the Great. The guide point out the royal tombs linked to Alexander Jagiellon and the queens Elizabeth of Habsburg and Barbara Radziwiłł. Students hear about the cathedral’s underground “treasures,” such as burial crowns and other royal insignia (including rings and a sceptre) hidden in 1939, rediscovered in 2024. 

Cathedral Bell Tower: students discover historical details such as the city’s oldest clock (installed in the 17th century) and notable bells, including a large bell dedicated to St Casimir by climbing to the observation level for the beautiful panoramic views.

By the end of the excursion, students demonstrate a clear understanding of Vilnius’ historical and cultural significance, are able to contextualize key aspects of Lithuanian history and identity, apply critical observation skills to heritage sites, engage in informed intercultural dialogue, and contribute effectively to group cohesion through collaborative learning experiences.
