Students participate in a walking tour of Kaunas, covering key districts such as Žaliakalnis, Freedom Avenue (Laisvės alėja), and the Old Town. The tour combines historical commentary, architectural analysis, and cultural interpretation, allowing students to explore the city’s evolution from medieval origins to its modern identity. The cold temperature was exceptional and a little problem (-18°C degrees)

Particular emphasis is placed on Kaunas’ role during the interwar period, when it served as the temporary capital of Lithuania, as well as on its distinctive modernist architecture, recognised for its European significance. Students are introduced to major historical milestones, socio-political transformations, and cultural influences that have shaped the city.

The guided format encourages active participation: students are invited to ask questions, express observations, and engage in dialogue with the guide and their peers. Informal exchanges during the walk contribute to a dynamic learning atmosphere, reinforcing group cohesion and facilitating spontaneous intercultural communication in an authentic, real-world context.

This activity aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the historical, cultural, and architectural development of Kaunas within both a national and European context. By engaging directly with the urban landscape, students are encouraged to contextualise historical knowledge through spatial and visual analysis.

The tour encourages interaction between students and tour guides, allowing participants to ask questions and share impressions. It also provides opportunities for informal exchanges, strengthens group collaboration in an authentic cultural setting. By the end of the activity, students demonstrate an enhanced understanding of Kaunas’ historical, cultural, architectural heritage within a European context. They show improved listening and oral communication skills in English through active participation and intercultural interaction. Additionally, students develop greater intercultural awareness, critical observation skills, collaborative attitudes in an authentic learning environment.
